Background of the Study

Homework is a crucial aspect of academic learning, reinforcing classroom instruction and promoting independent study. It helps students develop time management skills, discipline, and responsibility while enhancing their comprehension of subjects (Adeyemi & Yusuf, 2023). However, many secondary school students in Ilorin South Local Government Area, Kwara State, struggle with homework completion due to forgetfulness, poor time management, and lack of organization. Teachers often report cases of incomplete or missing assignments, which negatively impact students' academic performance and overall learning outcomes (Okonkwo & Ibrahim, 2024).

Traditional homework reminder methods, such as writing assignments in notebooks or relying on verbal instructions, are often ineffective. Students may forget to check their notes, misplace assignment details, or fail to allocate sufficient time for homework completion. Additionally, many parents are unaware of their children’s assignments, making it difficult for them to provide the necessary guidance and supervision (Olawale & Musa, 2023). These challenges highlight the need for a structured and efficient reminder system that ensures students stay on track with their homework obligations.

With the widespread use of mobile technology, a mobile-based homework reminder application can provide a viable solution to these challenges. Mobile applications offer real-time notifications, task scheduling, and personalized reminders, making it easier for students to manage their homework effectively (Adebayo & Salisu, 2023). Such an application can allow teachers to assign homework digitally, set deadlines, and send automated reminders to students and parents, ensuring accountability and improved academic performance.

In Ilorin South Local Government Area, where mobile phone usage is increasing among secondary school students, leveraging technology for academic purposes can significantly enhance learning experiences. By developing a Mobile-Based Homework Reminder Application, this study aims to provide a user-friendly and efficient tool to help students manage their assignments, reduce forgetfulness, and improve overall academic discipline.

Statement of the Problem

Many secondary school students in Ilorin South Local Government Area struggle with completing their homework on time due to forgetfulness, poor organization, and a lack of structured reminders. Teachers often observe that students fail to submit assignments, leading to incomplete coursework and lower academic performance (Adebayo & Salisu, 2024). The absence of an effective reminder system makes it difficult for students to prioritize their homework, particularly when they have multiple assignments from different subjects.

Traditional homework reminder methods, such as verbal instructions or written notes, have proven to be ineffective. Students often misplace their notes, forget to check their assignments, or procrastinate due to poor time management skills (Okonkwo & Musa, 2024). Additionally, parents have limited involvement in their children’s homework due to a lack of communication from teachers, making it challenging to provide the necessary support.

The increasing use of smartphones among secondary school students presents an opportunity to address this problem through digital solutions. A mobile-based homework reminder application can automate assignment notifications, set deadline alerts, and enable students to track their academic tasks more effectively. However, there is currently no widely implemented mobile solution tailored to the specific needs of secondary school students in Ilorin South. This study seeks to fill this gap by developing a Mobile-Based Homework Reminder Application to enhance homework management, improve student accountability, and support academic success.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To design and develop a Mobile-Based Homework Reminder Application for secondary school students in Ilorin South Local Government Area to improve assignment management.

  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of the application in reducing homework forgetfulness and improving timely submission rates.

  3. To assess the impact of the application on student academic performance, organization, and parental involvement in homework supervision.

Research Questions

  1. What are the common challenges faced by secondary school students in managing and completing their homework?

  2. How can a Mobile-Based Homework Reminder Application improve student organization and homework completion rates?

  3. What are the potential benefits of implementing a mobile homework reminder system on student performance and parental involvement?

Research Hypotheses

  1. The implementation of a Mobile-Based Homework Reminder Application will significantly reduce the rate of missed or incomplete homework among secondary school students.

  2. There is a positive correlation between the use of a mobile homework reminder system and improved time management skills among students.

  3. A well-designed homework reminder application will enhance parental involvement in monitoring and supporting their children's assignments.

Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it introduces an innovative technological solution to address the challenges of homework management in secondary schools. The Mobile-Based Homework Reminder Application will provide students with a structured and automated system to keep track of their assignments, reducing forgetfulness and improving organization. Teachers will benefit from improved assignment tracking and better student engagement, while parents will have greater visibility into their children's academic tasks. Additionally, this research contributes to the growing adoption of digital tools in education, providing a model for integrating technology into student learning and academic planning.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study is limited to the development and implementation of a Mobile-Based Homework Reminder Application for secondary schools within Ilorin South Local Government Area, Kwara State. The research will focus on assessing the usability, effectiveness, and impact of the application on student homework management. Data collection will be restricted to students, teachers, and parents within the sampled secondary schools. The study will not extend to primary schools, tertiary institutions, or other local government areas outside Ilorin South.
